Sophie Hunter and Sienna Miller show the shirt dress is still right-for-now at Wimbledon

by Alice Newbold for THE TELEGRAPHJuly 11, 2016

We’ve long extolled the virtues of the shirt dress.
The humble wardrobe staple might not be about to reinvent the trend
rule book, but it makes getting dressed a whole lot easier. Both breezy
yet elegant, a shirt dress is a faithful friend that never fails to pull
you together.

Serving up new shirting inspiration this weekend, were Sienna Miller
and Sophie Hunter, who both chose beautiful riffs on the dress style to
wear to Wimbledon.

First up, Hunter took her place in
the royal spectator’s box wearing a white mid-length Temperley shirt
dress stitched with symmetrical pretty black embroidery. (Side note:
could Hunter and husband Benedict Cumberbatch be vying for a place as
2016’s best-dressed couple?)

The theatre director left the
button-down dress style fastened tightly at the collar for a preppy
twist on the feminine cut and print, then threw a nattily-cut blazer on
for good measure. With black accessories acting as an extension of the
black embroidery, the whole look was utterly delightful for a British
summer afternoon.

If Hunter’s dress hit a high note between preppy and pretty, then Sienna
Miller’s symbolised the fluid, pared-down potential of the shirt dress.

Don’t let these well-dressed women kid you that the shirt dress
should be the reserve of formal wear. It’s actually a multiple-use item.
Sure, you can wear it as a dress, but how about layering looser styles
over trousers? With a roomy jumper worn over the top and the shirt tails
left swinging, you’ll have a fresh take on workwear that is brilliant
for combatting office air con.Hunter and Miller’s shirt dresses might sing of ladylike fashion, but
there are myriad of minimal styles out there that could be toughened up
with trainers or chunky boots for the weekend. Oh and did we mention
how forgiving they are on derrières?Go forth and stockpile your own wear-anywhere stash of simple shirt dresses. You won’t regret it.
